Chronic facet mediated back pain can now be treated Non-invasively using HiFu and cutting edge technology using sound to perform thermal ablation.

STAMFORD, CT, UNITED STATES, August 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Stamford Health Becomes First U.S. Hospital to Perform High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound to Treat Low Back Pain with FUSMobile’s Neurolyser XR

STAMFORD, Conn. August 21, 2026. FUSMobile, Inc., developer of the Neurolyser XR focused ultrasound system, today announced that Stamford Health has become the first hospital in the United States to install the Neurolyser XR and treat patients with the technology.

The first patient was treated on August 18, 2026, by Dr. Ofer Wellisch at Stamford Health’s Tully Health Center in Stamford, Connecticut.

Neurolyser XR uses focused ultrasound, guided by X-ray imaging, to treat small nerves in the lower back that can be a source of chronic pain. Unlike conventional radiofrequency ablation (RFA), the treatment is delivered from outside the body, so physicians do not need to insert needles or probes to reach the targeted nerves.

The system directs ultrasound energy to a precise treatment point, where it heats and non-invasively destroys the targeted nerve while the energy passes innocuously through surrounding tissue at much lower levels.

“Bringing Neurolyser XR into a hospital setting is an important milestone for FUSMobile and for the continued adoption of noninvasive focused ultrasound in interventional pain medicine,” said Arik Hananel, MD, CEO of FUSMobile. “We are proud that Stamford Health is the first hospital in the United States to offer this technology to its patients, and we congratulate Dr. Wellisch and the entire Stamford Health team on completing their first treatment.”

Neurolyser XR is designed as a noninvasive alternative to conventional needle-based radiofrequency ablation for appropriately selected patients with chronic low back pain related to the facet joints. Physicians use familiar X-ray imaging to identify the treatment area and deliver focused ultrasound from outside the body, without an incision or a needle placed at the nerve.

The installation at Stamford Health represents another important step in the U.S. commercialization of Neurolyser XR following FDA authorization of the system in November 2025. Neurolyser technology is also being used internationally, with patients treated in multiple countries.

Dr. Wellisch leads the Division of Pain Medicine at Stamford Health. Dr. Wellisch is part of the Hospital for Special Surgery Spine Center with Stamford Health, as well as the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Neuroscience Continuum. Stamford Health’s Division of Pain Medicine worked in collaboration with its Department of Research, to bring this treatment from a research protocol into clinical care.

“I am proud of our institution and its commitment to innovation and getting the most effective and safest treatments to patients, demonstrated by our participation in the pivotal clinical trial that led to FDA approval for this technology,” said Dr. Ofer Wellisch. This offering will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many of our patients who suffer chronic, debilitating back pain.”

The first procedure was performed at Tully Health Center, part of Stamford Health’s network of outpatient and specialty care facilities.

“Stamford Health is committed to bringing innovative technologies and treatment options to the patients and communities we serve,” said Ellen Komar, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. “We are proud to be the first hospital in the United States to introduce Neurolyser XR and to support our physicians in expanding access to innovative, noninvasive approaches to patient care.”

"The integration of Neurolyser XR into Stamford Hospital‘s Pain Center and neuroscience service line demonstrates successful utilization of the technology in an integrated medical center and hospital system." said Ron Aginsky, President and Co-founder of FUSMobile. "We are proud to partner with Stamford Health in our shared effort to expand access to this noninvasive care. We are deeply committed to standing alongside Dr. Wellisch and his team as they introduce this advanced treatment option to patients who need it most."

About Neurolyser XR

Neurolyser XR is a noninvasive focused ultrasound system developed by FUSMobile to treat chronic low back pain related to the facet joints. Using X-ray guidance, physicians direct focused ultrasound energy from outside the body to a small nerve that carries pain signals from the affected joint. The energy heats and destroys the targeted nerve without requiring an incision or a needle or radiofrequency probe at the treatment site.

Because the ultrasound is focused on a precise point, the treatment can reach the targeted nerve while the energy passing through surrounding tissue remains much lower.
