NETCOM’s Mercury Rising event combines training, development to strengthen readiness
Led by Capt. Ara L. Gahan, the company commander, and First Sgt. Ruben, the event brought together Soldiers from across the company. Acting NETCOM Commanding General Anne-Marie R. Wiersgalla and NETCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Adam B. Schuessler also joined the activities.
Mercury Rising is NETCOM’s approach to traditional payday activities, bringing training and unit engagement together in a single event. The schedule was designed to challenge Soldiers physically, give them opportunities to discuss important professional topics and reinforce the standards that contribute to a ready force.
Soldiers began with a physical training circuit that included exercises supporting the overall fitness requirements of the Army Fitness Test. The session culminated in a timed team race in which participants carried an 365-pound sandbag. The event required teams to work together under physical strain, coordinating their efforts to complete the challenge.
The day also included round-robin leader professional development sessions covering suicide awareness and prevention, the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program, and equal opportunity. The small-group format gave Soldiers the opportunity to engage with the topics and discuss their responsibilities in fostering a professional, supportive environment.
“Mercury Rising/payday activities strengthen readiness by combining physical training, professional development, mandatory training, and barracks inspections to reinforce standards, discipline, and individual accountability,” Gahan said. “Conducting these events together also builds camaraderie and unit cohesion by creating regular opportunities for Soldiers to train, communicate, and maintain pride in their appearance, living areas, and organization.”
The combination of physical challenge and professional development reflects the Army’s focus on preparing Soldiers to meet changing demands. Physical fitness supports the ability to perform under pressure, while shared training and communication help build trust among teammates. Professional discussions reinforce the knowledge and standards Soldiers need to contribute to a disciplined, effective organization.
Mercury Rising also provides a recurring opportunity for leaders and Soldiers to connect outside their daily duties. That interaction can strengthen communication, encourage accountability and reinforce a shared sense of purpose across the company.
NETCOM officials said the event supports the command’s efforts to build the Army of 2030 through greater resiliency, adaptability and lethality. By bringing Soldiers together to train, learn and uphold unit standards, Mercury Rising contributes to the preparedness and unity needed for the force to respond to future challenges.
